A survey of local and Arab realities, is hardly find a center of science and mathematics education, where as in some places around the world, there are similar centers especially in East Asia, Europe and United States of America, which confirm the importance of establishing such a center in this form and body in Saudi Arabia to become a scientific beacon that help in developing science and mathematics education.

Therefore, it becomes essential on the specialists and those responsible for education, to review the science and mathematics education in particular and not to let this without initiatives. The best locations from which educational and cultural move starts are universities; accordingly suggested that King Saud University to take the initiative and the pioneer thought to develop science and mathematics education through establishing an excellence center to develop this important fields on the long run to participate in the scientific and cultural renaissance of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The declaration of the establishment of the ECSME was singed by Professor Abdullah A. Alothman, the Rector of King Saud University in the first day of Ramadan 1428H (15/9/2007).

 

The center will carry a number of the following tasks:

 

- Develop innovative programs to connect students and teachers in all levels with the educational research operations, especially in science and mathematics fields.

- To build a harmonious society of educationalists and specialists in science and mathematics fields to improve science and mathematics education.

- Positive participation in improving science and mathematics reputation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by developing considered national programs to include the educational research within science and mathematics education.

- To play an active role to include larger numbers of students in science and mathematics fields.

- To have an active role in training science and mathematics teachers (K-12), and faculty members in universities.

- Moving science and mathematics education forward from the narrowness of the local level to the wideness of the international partnership.
